My research questions center on determining the link between Compassion Fatigue and fourth year nursing students. The assumption is that once they begin clinical rotation CFF begins to develop, but there is also a hypothesis that service type plays a role. In order to determine the validity of my hypothesis, I have chosen the Jefferson Scale of Empathy for Nursing and the Professional Quality of Life Scales. In my study, I will use both measurement tools. The Jefferson Scale of Empathy adapted for health profession students is commonly used to measure empathy in nursing students. It is a 20-item survey as well as a demographic questionnaire ( Fields, et al., 2011). In a 2011 study by Fields et al., they found that internal consistency of the scale was .78, which fell within the generally agreed standard. I feel very confident in this instrument.

I will also be using the Professional Quality of Life Theory of Measurement because it is commonly used to measure negative and positive affects of helping others who experience suffering and trauma (Professional Quality of Life Scale, 2016). The ProQOL has sub scales for compassion satisfaction, burnout, and compassion fatigue.
