This week we’re looking at Fundraising…how nonprofits get their money.

Go to the website of one of the nonprofits listed below (not already selected by another student) and poke around looking for their financial information (usually in an “annual report” section).    If you can’t find the info on their website, then go to guidestar.org and access one of their IRS Form 990 Reports – the info will be in that. In order to access that, you may have to register (free) on Guidestar.org

Here’s what I want you to find out:

1. How much is their total revenue for the most recent year reported?
2. How much of their revenue comes from governmental money?
3. What is their percentage of total support that comes from governmental money?
4. Comment on whether these numbers are more or less than what you expected to find.

American Diabetes Association

1.       Total revenue for the most recent year reported:  $228,492.00

2.       Total revenue from governmental money:  $0.00

3.       Percentage of total support that comes from governmental money:  0%

4.       Comments:

The financial reports contained in the Annual Report did not list any revenue coming from the government.  The revenue came from donations, special events, bequests, and fees from exchange transactions.   I was surprised to see that the ADA did not receive money from the government since diabetes is a large health issue.  Since obtaining funds from the government can be a lengthy and complicated process and often comes with “strings attached,” my feeling is that the ADA does not ask for or receive money from the government.  I think that people often assume that as a nonprofit, the organization will receive government funds.  It is interesting to see the breakdown of the revenue.

 2012-2013 fiscal year report

The total revenue for Plan Parenthood is a little over 1.2 Billion.

I found that 45% percent of this amount comes from federal, state, and local tax payer.  Which is 540,000,000 millions dollars.

Another  540,600,000 million dollars is from Government Health Services Grants and reimbursements.

These  figures are a shock to me. Plan parenthood participate in a high volume of abortions generating over 147 millions dollars from abortions and they even do abortions in the second trimester.

*reported 327,166 abortions in 2012
