blood doping 1

Your red blood cells (RBCs) contain hemoglobin and function to transport most of the oxygen in the blood. Delivery of oxygen to our muscles during exercise determines your overall performance in that activity. Blood doping or artificially induced polycythemia has been a method used by some athletes in order to increase RBC count in the blood. This increase allows more oxygen to be transported to the muscles which in turn helps enhance athletic performance. One of the most recent and controversial athletes to come under the microscope for blood doping is Lance Armstrong. He is a former professional road racing cyclist who won the Tour de France a record of seven consecutive times between 1999 and 2005. Following a long investigation (and many years of denying allegations), it was eventually determined that he (and many others during his era) had used blood doping to enhance his athletic performance, giving him an unfair advantage. As such, in 2012 Lance Armstrong was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles and banned from competition for life.

politics judge selection and judicial outcomes

After the death of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia in February 2016, President Obama nominated U.S. Circuit Court Judge Merrick Garland to fill the vacancy. However, the Republican majority Senate refused to vote on the nomination. President Obama argued that the constitutional language stating that the president “shall” appoint judges to the Supreme Court “with the advice and consent of the Senate” meant that the Senate had an obligation to hold a vote on the nomination. However, Senate Republicans maintained that they were fulfilling their constitutional duty by choosing not to consider Judge Garland.

To prepare, review the Learning Resources, in particular the Posner op-ed in the Washington Post on the Supreme Court, and consider how politics affects judicial selection.

Provide your perspective on how politics affects judicial selection. Include your perspective on the influence of a federal judge’s political ideology on judicial outcomes.

Note: Should include an in-text Bluebook citation, if referencing cases, as well as a citation in the reference list.

chatbot project using python and nlp techniques

Project Objective: Create a chatbot using Python and NLP techniques. The chatbot should be able to carry on a limited conversation in a particular domain using a knowledge base scraped from the web and knowledge it learns from the user.

Overview: The project has three phases:

1. 40 points: scrape the web for content to build a simple knowledge base

2. 40 points: build a chatbot that can discuss a topic and remember things about the user

3. 20 points: evaluation and report

Deliverables timeline:

– September 8: domain (starter url) submission

– September 21: Phase 1 due: upload web crawler and search code. Provide the topic, the urls you retrieved, and the data you scraped off those websites. Show a sample dialog you would like your chatbot to be able to do.

– October 13: Phase 2 due: upload chatbot code.

– October 30: Phase 3 due: upload your report.

– Later: demo your chatbot.

Part 1 Details

40 points: web crawler and search techniques.

Part 2 Details

40 points: build the chatbot

Part 3 Details

20 points: Evaluation and report

Produce a report (no specific format but you’ll need at least 5 pages) that contains a diagram of your dialog tree, sample dialog interactions, an appendix for the knowledge base you created and an appendix for any user models that were created. Perform evaluations of the chatbot (see J&M Chp. 24, 2
nd. ed.) and analysis of its strengths and weaknesses.

audience affects and effects 1

Does popular culture change how society views an idea? Or does popular culture reinforce dominant ideas, thereby slowing the pace of change?

To prepare, read through this week’s Learning Resources.

  • Violence

Popular culture frequently has been accused of being too explicit, showing too much violence, pushing the boundaries of acceptable language, and displaying excessive nudity.

A watershed moment in American television history is the infamous half-time performance at the Super Bowl in 2004 in which Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake were performing. During the performance, a brief wardrobe malfunction occurred when Timberlake accidentally moved the fabric covering Jackson’s breast. While Jackson’s nipple was not exposed, most viewers believed it had been. This led to a crackdown by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the governmental body in charge of indecency on the public airwaves. The incident has been described as both an important moment for maintaining decency on the airwaves and so trivial as not to deserve comment.

Consider how audiences have perceived indecent or violent behavior within popular culture. Have popular culture representations of violence or indecency pushed boundaries? Or have they reinforced societal ideas of what is appropriate?

Write a 300-word response in which you describe the influence of the intended audience on how the popular culture artifact in your discussion portrays messages about the issue.

The author offers humorous opinions on art and culture. He cites an exhibition of Egyptian antiquities he attended in Melbourne, Australia, as an example of a phenomenon in which viewers find many of the world’s most spectacular works of art less impressive than they otherwise might thanks to the prevalence of reproductions in popular culture.
